Dear Parents of West Richland...

Dear Parents of West Richland,

The West Richland City Council has been approached by cannabis shop owner, Ken Weaver, who has requested permission to open and operate the first cannabis (marijuana) shop in West Richland. The potential negative impact of increased access to cannabis in our community is immeasurable. Countless lives- from young children to elderly neighbors- will be impacted by the increased availability of this psychoactive drug in our community. Not only will property values, quality of life, and general well-being of the community go down- but it will put our children and posterity at a great risk. As described in the video above, marijuana has extensive detrimental effects on the brain- especially in people under the age of 25. The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) article "Know the Negative Effects of Marijuana" lists the effects of marijuana quite clearly, and they include mental health issues such as anxiety, schizophrenia, and depression. Using marijuana can permanently lower IQ (up to 8 points!) especially when used at a younger age. Marijuana use has led to poor life outcomes- with less career success, more relationship problems, reduced life satisfaction, and worse educational outcomes.

Visit https://www.samhsa.gov/marijuana to learn more about the clear negative effects of marijuana. And please visit our other articles that list video testimonies of real people and their experiences with THC and Marijuana use.

Parents, we must take a stand against allowing this psychoactive drug into our community. There is no possible benefit that it can bring- in fact, it risks our children's and loved ones well-being. Sign petitions, attend City Council meetings, VOTE and make your voice known! Talk to your neighbors, family, and friends about the impact that marijuana will have on our community- about the impact to mental health and reduced educational success it will bring. Our community is currently thriving with new schools coming in, and new families moving here. We do not want to allow this drug to destroy the family-friendly, wholesome atmosphere we have worked so long and hard to build.

Most importantly - VOTE "DO NOT ALLOW" in the August 6th Primary Elections! City Council has initiated an Advisory vote to determine our communities interest in cannabis sales- and no matter how the election turns out, we must let City Council know that we do NOT want marijuana in our community now, or ever!
