THE POT SHOP ISSUE

At West Richland Citizens Group, we understand the importance of keeping our community safe and thriving. We believe that every child that sees marijuana sales normalized will have an increased chance of experimenting with this dangerous substance. We know that some percentage of those who partake in marijuana experience significant hardship and degraded quality of life. We have personally seen college educations and careers ended by those unfortunate enough to have become addicted to this hallucinogenic substance. We care about every child and every life in our community. That's why we're dedicated to tirelessly working to prevent the opening of a pot shop in our community. We are committed to preserving the safety and well-being of our fellow citizens, and promoting freedom and prosperity in our home town.

So, what's going on in West Richland right now?(2024)

A Yakima based marijuana dealer is pressing the City of West Richland to abandon their "no pot shops" policy.  The issue was brought to the West Richland planning commission in 2023. The commission heard dozens of citizens speak out against the motion to allow marijuana dispensaries in our town. The issue was brought to City Council, and again many showed up to speak out against it. If Council changes current policy, pot shops will be allowed to open in our town. Allowing recreational marijuana sales will work to destroy the family-friendly, safe community atmosphere that West Richland holds dear.

Sadly, some council members have already proposed to change the city's mission statement and vision- eliminating "family friendly" from the statements!

As a community group, we want to ensure that our citizens are informed of the facts and potential impact on our community. Please consider supporting us as we fight to keep our streets drug-free, children safe, and keep our community family-friendly!

Comprehensive Packet - WRCC Agenda detailing the Marijuana Dispensaries issue

Please look through this packet to learn more about what is going on in your community!

How can you support your town?

As concerned citizens of West Richland, we must speak out against Pot Shops being proposed in our community. The critical decision point lies with our City Council. Citizens must express their opinion to the City Council in writing and in person at Council Meetings. Council Meetings are held at the first and third Tuesdays every month at 6pm. Please gather your friends, neighbors, and church members and encourage them to each express their opinion.

Make no mistake, every voice counts.

Fighting for the freedom, prosperity, and success of our home town.

HERE ARE THE FACTS

"Approximately 1 in 10 people who use marijuana will become addicted. When they start before age 18, the rate of addiction rises to 1 in 6." (Know the Risk of Marijuana)

VOTE "DO NOT ALLOW"
 CANNABIS SALES IN WEST RICHLAND

The City Council has decided to put out an advisory vote for West Richland Citizens- to determine the desire for cannabis sales to be allowed in our community. As a community- we must make our voices known and say NO to cannabis sales in our community!

In our last election, only ~30% of the population voted- West Richland we need to do better! Make sure that you are voting in the elections- but also sharing with your neighbors, friends, church members, and colleagues to do the same.

Use the resources and information provided on this website to spread awareness on the dangers and terrible impact that marijuana has on communities, families, and businesses!

THC IS
3x STRONGER
THAN BEFORE

Over the past few decades, the amount of THC in marijuana has steadily climbed; today's marijuana has three times the concentration of THC compared to 25 years ago. The higher the THC amount, the stronger the effects on the brain—likely contributing to increased rates of marijuana-related emergency room visits. While there is no research yet on how higher potency affects the long-term risks of marijuana use, more THC is likely to lead to higher rates of dependency and addiction.

We have compiled a list of articles for you to explore and broaden your understanding of the cultural, economic, and health impact that marijuana has on a community, and a nation.

STOP THE

POT SHOP

Marijuana use can have negative and long-term effects:

Brain health: Marijuana can cause permanent IQ loss of as much as 8 points when people start using it at a young age. These IQ points do not come back, even after quitting marijuana.

Mental health: Studies link marijuana use to depression, anxiety, suicide planning, and psychotic episodes. It is not known, however, if marijuana use is the cause of these conditions.

Athletic Performance: Research shows that marijuana affects timing, movement, and coordination, which can harm athletic performance.

Driving: People who drive under the influence of marijuana can experience dangerous effects: slower reactions, lane weaving, decreased coordination, and difficulty reacting to signals and sounds on the road.

Baby’s health and development: Marijuana use during pregnancy may cause fetal growth restriction, premature birth, stillbirth, and problems with brain development, resulting in hyperactivity and poor cognitive function. Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and other chemicals from marijuana can also be passed from a mother to her baby through breast milk, further impacting a child’s healthy development.

Daily life: Using marijuana can affect performance and how well people do in life.

Research shows that people who use marijuana are more likely to have relationship problems, worse educational outcomes, lower career achievement, and reduced life satisfaction.

WRCG PETITION TO STOP CANNABIS SALES IN WEST RICHLAND

"There is a constant stream of new, more potent cannabis products in kid-friendly flavors and packaging designed to attract teens and young adults. "
(Marijuana Resource Center. Partnership to End Addiction, 2024)

The Partnership to End Addiction organization's Marijuana Resource page describes many of the risks and dangers of marijuana products, and even state how the products are designed to attract youth!!!

"Cannabis is an addictive drug that's particularly harmful to developing adolescent brains. Teens that consume it have poorer life outcomes on a number of measures. They have more mental health disorders, including depression, anxiety, and psychosis. As a group, they complete less school and are more likely to be unemployed or underemployed than their peers."
